Black and white glamour on the red carpet

Despite 2009’s recession blues, Oscar glam was far from dead at the 81st Academy Awards. From sleek, body-conscious gowns to elegant one-shoulder dresses and asymmetrical necklines, timeless silhouettes dominated the Oscar red carpet.

David Letterman doesn’t only play it for laughs

It took all of seven seconds for David Letterman to cut Rod Blagojevich off at the knees during the disgraced politician’s “Late Show” appearance last week.

The episode was a reminder of Letterman’s least appreciated skill. The monologue is fun, the “Top Ten” list an inspired creation, but often the best work on the “Late Show” comes when Letterman interviews the people invited to sit across from him.

Letterman rarely avoids or glosses over difficult subjects, drilling in with a journalist’s tenacity that he sometimes masks with a self-effacing attitude, and sometimes not. First-time Oscar nominee Peter Gabriel’s opting out of his performance at this year’s presentation. The star, up for best original song, decided not to sing WALL-E’s “Down to Earth” when he found out the song would be shortened to only 65 seconds.

“It’s a bit unfortunate because the songwriters, even though they’re a small part of the whole filmmaking process, we still work bloody hard and deserve a place in the ceremony as well,” Gabriel announced on his website. “I’m an old fart and it is not going to do me any harm to make a little protest, but I think for some of the other artists it is not so easy.”

The singer, 59, still plans to attend the show but hopes a gospel choir will take his place onstage.
